How to fill the same web form every time without retyping
If you fill the same form every day (a timesheet, a supplier order, a support ticket, a test form), retyping is slow and error-prone. There are three common ways to stop doing it.
1. Browser autofill
Free and built in. Best for names, addresses and contact details. It won't fill custom fields such as project codes, drop-downs specific to one site, or check boxes.
2. A text expander
You type a short code and it expands into a longer text. Good for long answers you paste often. You still have to click into each field and trigger it yourself.
3. Per-site autofill rules
A rule says: on this site, fill these fields with these values, optionally as soon as the page loads. It handles custom fields, drop-downs and check boxes, and it is the closest thing to "fill the whole form for me".
Good practice
- Keep one rule set per site so a value never ends up on the wrong site.
- Don't put passwords or card numbers in rules; a password manager is built for those.
- If fields have changing names, match them with a pattern rather than the exact name.
